David Fernandez announced as Head Softball Coach

David Fernandez

Coach Fernandez began his coaching career in 2011 as an assistant coach at American Senior High School (Hialeah, FL).  He served as an assistant for six years before accepting the position of head coach in 2017. Fernandez served as head coach for the American Patriots for two seasons — leading the program to a pair of regional semifinals appearances. Overall, the program won eight consecutive district championships (2011-2018) — a feat that has not ever been accomplished by a Miami-Dade County public school in Softball — with Fernandez as a part of the staff. In 2018, Fernandez accepted an assistant coaching position at St. Thomas University (Fl.). In his only season with the Bobcats, Fernandez helped the team have its first 20-win season since 2014.

In the fall of 2019, Fernandez accepted the position of head softball coach at ASA College.  Unfortunately, the Spring 2020 season was cut short due to Covid-19.  With the future uncertain at ASA College, Coach Fernandez has accepted the Head Coaching position at the University of Ft Lauderdale.

“It’s one of those situations that just feels right” said Fernandez.  He explained that he knows what it’s like to try and build something new. “There is something special and exciting about an upstart program. This is an opportunity to work hard and build something worth having pride over!  I feel that UFTL and I share the same the vision for the future when it comes to Woman’s Softball in South Florida.”
